Giving

Simple and Secure

We believe everything we have comes from God, and we have the privilege of partnering together to make a tangible and eternal impact in our city, country and world.

City Church is heavily involved in expressing the love of God to our neighbours in our city, within our country and throughout our world. We are proud to partner with great organizations in Montreal, and as far away at The Philippines.

What God Teaches

Giving acknowledges God as the giver of everything we have. (James 1:17)

Giving reflects our trust that God will provide for us, and He is more valuable to us than money . (Matthew 6:19-24)

Giving involves planning, and a proportionate (%) gift that is tied to our gross income. This allows us to worship through our giving, and it is not tied to circumstances or emotions in the moment. When we plan our proportionate gift, we can give with confidence--not out of guilt or scrambling at the last minute. (1 Corinthians 16:2)

Giving allows us to give cheerfully with others in a local church where we can see God's work multiply in our city, country and world. (2 Corinthians 9:6-7)

What does "tithe" mean?

Believers in God have consistently followed a guideline for giving is called the tithe (Leviticus 27:30 & Luke 11:42 by Jesus ). The tithe means giving a tenth, or 10% of our gross earnings back to God.

What does "offering" mean?

An offering is a gift given to a specific need above and beyond our tithe. This may be a specific prompting by God, or to give to a special project.

WHERE SHOULD I START?

Although the tithe (10%) is still a good rule of thumb, our conviction is that the best standard for followers of Jesus is grace giving.

We believe the tithe is still a good rule of thumb for giving, but grace giving will ultimately go beyond this original standard because grace always trumps the law. Under the law, we had rules to protect and guide us. Under grace, we receive something much better: A change of heart, and the ability to please God continuously.

If you are new to giving, we suggest you start with prayer. A lasting and eternally-driven decision should come from God--not from any person. Ask God for wisdom and a clear next step. If God doesn't want you to start with 10%, where do you start?

Next, generosity should be tied to a percentage of your gross income that requires some faith and adjustments to your current standard of life.

As your faith grows and matures, your heart will desire to increase that percentage and take note of how God blesses your financial gifts as He promises to do. A good goal would be to increase your giving percentage each year, just as you grow spiritually.

Like any other muscle, your faith requires exercise, and you will soon find out the excitement that comes when you see God actively intervening in your financial affairs. While he is doing that for you, you will be amazed at how you are bringing God's love to more people!

More than anything, we want you to experience the peace, the joy, and the supernatural provision of God for you and your family. Be led by the Holy Spirit as you prayerfully consider how God has blessed you, and how He wants you to respond to the growing impact of your spiritual family, City Church.

Grace giving allows us to consider the question, "How can I best honour God?" rather than "What is the minimum requirement?"
